What Are Cookies and Similar Technologies?

They serve a range of purposes, from keeping a site working correctly to measuring how it is used. Several distinct mechanisms are commonly grouped under the general term "cookies," and this policy uses that term broadly to include the technologies described below.

A session cookie exists only for the duration of a browsing session and is removed when you close your browser. StabilityTest may use browser storage to support website functionality, such as remembering a preference or supporting features of the testing tool. Because these mechanisms store information in your browser in a way comparable to cookies, they are covered by this policy even though they are not technically HTTP cookies.

URL and Referral Identifiers

Some information is carried in the address (URL) of a link rather than stored on your device. For example, an affiliate or referral link may include a parameter that identifies StabilityTest as the referring website. A referral identifier contained in a URL is not itself a cookie, although the destination site you reach may use its own cookies or storage. This is explained further under Affiliate and Referral Tracking below.

First-Party and Third-Party Technologies

A first-party technology is set by StabilityTest for the StabilityTest website. A third-party technology is set by another provider (such as an analytics or advertising service) when that service is active on the site or when you interact with third-party content. The presence of a third-party provider somewhere in the Service does not by itself mean that provider sets a cookie in your browser; whether it does depends on the specific technology involved. Third-party technologies are governed by the relevant provider's own policies.

How StabilityTest Uses These Technologies

StabilityTest aims to use these technologies sparingly and for clear purposes. Depending on the features and services active at a given time, they may:

• keep the website functioning and secure;
• remember preferences and support features of the testing tool;
• help us understand how the Service is used, where analytics or measurement services are enabled;
• support advertising, where advertising services are enabled; and
• attribute affiliate or referral visits.

Which of these apply at any given time depends on the features and third-party services that are active and, where required, on the choices you make. The categories below describe each purpose in more detail.

Categories of Cookies and Similar Technologies

StabilityTest groups the technologies it uses or may use into the following categories.

Strictly Necessary Technologies

These technologies are required to provide, secure, maintain, or operate the website and its core features, such as the basic mechanisms that allow pages to load correctly and keep the Service available and secure. Because the site cannot function properly without them, they are not optional and are generally not subject to consent. Optional analytics and advertising technologies are never included in this category.

Functional and Preference Technologies

These technologies remember choices you make, or otherwise improve how the Service works, such as by retaining a preference so you do not need to set it again. StabilityTest may use browser storage for functionality of this kind. Where specific preference technologies are used, they are limited to supporting the feature involved.

Analytics and Measurement Technologies

StabilityTest currently uses Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how visitors use the site, such as which pages are viewed and how the Service performs, so it can be improved. As described in the Privacy Policy, this information is used in aggregate and is not used to build identifiable profiles of browsing activity. Analytics is treated as an optional technology and, where applicable law requires consent before it operates, is handled through the site's applicable consent mechanism.

Advertising Technologies

Where advertising is enabled, advertising providers may use cookies or similar technologies to deliver and measure advertising. These are optional technologies. When advertising involves Google, additional detail is provided under Google AdSense and Advertising Technologies below. Advertising technologies are handled through the applicable consent mechanism where consent is required.

Affiliate and Referral Technologies

StabilityTest may use affiliate or referral links that carry an identifier used to attribute a visit, sign-up, or qualifying purchase. As noted above, a referral identifier in a link is not necessarily a cookie set by StabilityTest. The mechanics are described under Affiliate and Referral Tracking below.

Cookies and Technologies Used by StabilityTest

The specific cookies and similar technologies present depend on the site's current configuration and on which optional services are enabled. The technologies below reflect a review of the site during ordinary use as a logged-out visitor.

Cookies

• _ga and _ga_KS206YRBGF are analytics cookies used by Google Analytics (GA4) to measure how the site is used. They are set as first-party cookies on the StabilityTest domain, and the information they support is processed by Google under its own policies.
• _lscache_vary is a first-party cookie used by the site's LiteSpeed caching layer to serve cached pages correctly.

Local storage

• stabilitytest_visitor_id is a first-party value that StabilityTest stores in your browser when you run a connection test, to support the operation of the testing and statistics features. It is generated by StabilityTest and does not itself contain your name, email address, or IP address.

Session storage

• litespeed_docref and litespeed_reloaded are first-party values associated with the site's LiteSpeed caching layer and its page and cache behavior. Session storage is cleared when you close the browser tab or window.

This description reflects the technologies observed during ordinary use as a logged-out visitor, and it is kept up to date as the site's configuration and enabled services change. Because it reflects a single browser session, it does not rule out other technologies applying in other browsers, regions, user states, or configurations, and, where advertising is enabled in the future, additional advertising technologies may be used as described under Google AdSense and Advertising Technologies below.

Google AdSense and Advertising Technologies

StabilityTest is preparing to use third-party advertising, which may include Google advertising through the Google AdSense program. Google advertising is not necessarily active on the Service at all times; this section describes how it fits into the site's cookie framework when it is enabled.

When Google AdSense or other Google advertising services are enabled:

• Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to deliver and measure advertising;
• advertising may be personalized, based on information available to Google, or non-personalized, based on factors such as general context and coarse location;
• where applicable law requires consent before advertising cookies are used, those technologies are handled through the site's applicable consent mechanism; and
• Google processes the information it collects through its advertising services independently, under its own policies.

Specific Google advertising cookies are not listed in this policy until their use on the Service has been technically verified.

Third-Party Technologies

Some providers support the Service by processing network requests or data without necessarily storing anything in your browser. As explained in the Privacy Policy, StabilityTest's latency measurement requests pass through Cloudflare infrastructure, and connection-information lookups are performed through IPinfo using your public IP address. These are primarily network and data-processing relationships. Processing a request or an IP address is not the same as setting a cookie in your browser, and StabilityTest does not represent that Cloudflare or IPinfo places advertising or analytics cookies on visitors through these functions. Any browser technologies a provider does use are governed by that provider's own policies. Cloudflare's privacy information is available at https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/.

Where other third-party services (such as analytics or advertising providers) are enabled and do use cookies or similar technologies, those technologies fall within the categories described above and are handled through the applicable consent mechanism where required.

Affiliate and Referral Tracking

StabilityTest may include affiliate or referral links to third-party services, such as Proton VPN and AdGuard. These links can contain a referral parameter that identifies StabilityTest as the referring publisher, so that a visit, sign-up, or qualifying purchase can be attributed to it.

A referral parameter contained in a link is not necessarily a cookie set by StabilityTest in your browser. When you follow such a link, you leave StabilityTest and continue on the destination provider's website. That provider may then use its own cookies or similar technologies to recognize the referral, measure attribution, prevent fraud, or operate its service, all under its own privacy and cookie policies, which StabilityTest does not control. We encourage you to review the policies of any third-party service you visit this way. Further context on affiliate and referral relationships is provided in the Privacy Policy.

Consent and Optional Technologies

How these technologies are handled depends on their purpose. Technologies that are strictly necessary to provide or secure the website are used because the Service cannot function properly without them. Optional technologies, such as certain analytics and advertising technologies, are treated differently.

Where applicable law requires your consent before optional technologies are used, those technologies should operate only in accordance with the site's applicable consent mechanism. Consent is not the basis for every technology described in this policy; strictly necessary technologies, for example, do not generally depend on it. This document does not attempt to state how every privacy law treats every technology, and the controls available to you may vary depending on where you are.

Industry opt-out tools, such as those offered by the Digital Advertising Alliance and the Network Advertising Initiative, also let you manage participating advertising providers. These tools are operated independently, and their availability and effect are determined by the providers involved.

StabilityTest may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in the technologies it uses, the services it enables, or applicable legal requirements. When it does, the revised policy will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. As the site's configuration and enabled services change, the categories and technologies described here (and any published inventory) will be updated accordingly.
